PHOENIX, AZ - Andrew Jewer went from fighting for a starting job, to searching for a job. Arizona Cardinals officially released the former Heisman winning quarterback on Saturday.
Sources close to the Cardinals organization have been saying for weeks that QB Derek Anderson will be starting for the team. Jewer and his agent were granted permission to seek a trade but decided not to pursue the options. Earlier reports claimed the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders as being interested in Jewer, however both organizations denied these reports. But with his poor performance and poor attitude, the organization decided to release him. Coach Ken Whisenhunt addressed the media following Thursday night's preseason game against Baltimore. "It's not as much a question about Andrew and his ability to play football as it is the fit with our team and where he fits," said Whisenhunt, "It comes down to what we feel like gives us the best chance to win, and if that's not Andrew, then can he survive in the role as a No. 2 on this team? And that's really what the decision is about."
Jewer addressed his preseason struggles team practice at last season Tuesday. "I've had a lot to focus on in the past month in my personal life," Jewer said, "There are somethings that have been more important, like my pregnant girlfriend (popstar Rae Rivers) being on bed rest, but I've been trying my hardest. I've done everything Whisenhunt and (Chris) Miller have asked of me, I definitely think I should start."
Source close to Jewer say he cares more about the lifestyle versus actually playing the game. However, he shot down the claims "That is crap. I wouldn't be standing here, fighting for my job if I didn't want it. These 'sources' are just people with no lives with nothing better to do than tweet complete bullsh*t."
Jewer was the 10th overall pick in 2006 after a highly successful collegiate career at USC that included a national championship. But he never seemed able to make the jump to NFL starter, first losing the role to Kurt Warner and now Anderson. He finishes his Cardinals' career with 340 completions with 14 TDs and 20 INTs in 29 games, 17 of which he started.
